What is Design Thinking & Why Is it Beneficial for Present Age Businesses?

We are living in a day and age where innovation is at the heart of everything we do.

Recently, I was checking out blogs and I came upon this fairly new concept, one called “Design Thinking.” It got me all wondering what “Design Thinking” actually means…

Interestingly, according to a 2024 survey by McKinsey & Company, businesses that integrate design thinking into their processes see a 32% higher ROI compared to those that don’t.

Perhaps you have heard it a couple of times, a term often getting thrown around in meetings by senior leaders. Or maybe you’ve seen the term appear in a prospective employee’s resume.

Either way, design thinking is an ideology, one that’s gaining recognition across industries, from streamlining innovation to enhancing company profile design with a user-focused approach.

What is Design Thinking? 

Design thinking is a concept where workflows are used to mapping out stages of design. Design thinking allows businesses to work on a purpose, one that offers professionals standardized innovation and develops creative solutions to complex organizational problems.

Whether they are design-related or not, that’s another part of the question. And most design thinking processes aren’t actually fixated to the design process but literally go beyond.

Why is design thinking important? It sets the stone for innovation. Whether you want to innovate a product, process, service or invest in a business model, design thinking features two critical characteristics. It can be novel and useful, and can inspire meaningful change.

Design Thinking – It’s More of a Mindset Than an Approach

How is design thinking different from other innovation & ideation processes? It’s a solution-based and user-centric process, one that focuses on problems and provides solutions in quick succession. It means you focus on the solution to a problem instead of the problem itself.

For instance, let’s assume that a team is struggling in transitioning to remote work. With design thinking methodology, it will not only encourage the team to take the action but also increase the chance of employee engagement instead of completely focusing on the problem which can ultimately result in decreasing productivity and ruin the company’s profitability.

Empathize (Understanding the User)

  • Who are the users, and what are their needs and desires?
  • What challenges or frustrations are they experiencing?
  • How do they currently interact with the product or service?
  • What emotions or motivations drive their behavior?
  • How might cultural, social, or personal factors influence their experience?

Define (Framing the Problem)

  • What is the core problem we’re trying to solve?
  • How might we redefine the problem to focus on the user’s needs?
  • What insights have we gained from the empathy stage?
  • Are there any assumptions we need to validate or challenge?
  • How can we phrase the problem as a “How Might We” question?

Ideate (Generating Ideas)

  • What are all the possible ways to solve this problem?
  • How might we think beyond traditional solutions?
  • What constraints or boundaries can we challenge?
  • Which ideas seem most promising or innovative?
  • How can we combine different ideas to create something new?

Prototype (Building Solutions)

  • What is the simplest version of a solution we can create to test our ideas?
  • How can we represent our ideas visually or tangibly?
  • What feedback are we seeking from users about this prototype?
  • How does the prototype address the core problem?
  • What materials, tools, or resources are needed to create it?

Test (Validating Solutions)

  • What specific aspects of the prototype need validation?
  • How do users interact with the prototype?
  • What works well, and what doesn’t?
  • What feedback do users provide, both verbal and non-verbal?
  • How might we refine or pivot based on the feedback received?

Iterate (Improving and Refining)

  • What did we learn from testing, and how can we integrate those insights?
  • Are we still addressing the user’s core needs and challenges?
  • How can we simplify or enhance the solution?
  • Have we considered diverse perspectives in refining the design?
  • What should the next version of the prototype include?

What Are the 4 Phases of Innovation in Design Thinking? 

When it comes to design thinking, there are multiple models, which can range anywhere from three to seven steps.

Here are the four phases of effective innovation, of which design thinking is an integral part:

Clarify – The first phase focuses on narrowing down the focus of the design thinking process. It requires identifying the problem statement to arrive at the most reasonable outcome. Clarification is primarily achieved through observation and taking the time to determine the problem. It focuses on creating preventive solutions for issues that have not been successfully addressed in the past. Various tools and frameworks are available to make concrete observations without relying on assumptions. Once findings are gathered, it becomes easier for the organization to proceed to the next step, which involves shaping insights by framing those observations. This step is where you reframe the problem statement.

Ideate – The second phase emphasizes solidifying the problem statement and the guiding question. Once finalized, the next step is the ideation process, where the business employs a myriad of tools using systematic inventive thinking (SIT). This often lays the foundation for the innovation process, which can be replicated in future design thinking efforts. The goal is to overcome cognitive fixedness and introduce innovative ideas to solve complex business problems. The ideation process eliminates assumptions and prioritizes user requirements.

Develop – The third phase involves concept building and solution creation. At this stage, design thinking specialists conduct multiple rounds of prototyping, testing, and experimenting to arrive at effective solutions. These solutions address critical queries and evaluate concept viability. Developing solutions is not about perfection but rather about continuously experimenting with existing ideas to identify which elements of the plan work and which do not.

Implement – The fourth and final phase is implementation. This is where the entire process is put into action. It extends the development phase, with design specialists managing implementations. They begin with testing, reflecting, reiterating, and retesting until the solution is refined. This phase typically follows a nonlinear and iterative approach. Stakeholders often reflect on innovation and management strategies during this phase, learning from the outcomes of the innovation process and assessing which design thinking projects were truly successful.

Why Design Thinking Skills Matter? 

Since design thinking is a structured process of innovation, trial and error serves as an excellent approach to test and experiment with what works and what doesn’t.

However, this process can often become time-consuming, costly, and, at times, ineffective.

To overcome these challenges, it is crucial for the design thinking team to follow the implementation steps meticulously and efficiently. By doing so, organizations can streamline the process and discover effective ways to develop innovative and impactful solutions.

Design thinking always offers positive outcomes, one where both advancements and salaries work in tandem. It’s a more prevalent and strategic step towards setting the perfect foundation.

For example, while a typical marketing manager earns an average annual salary of $106,200, a professional with design thinking expertise can command a median annual salary of $133,900—a notable 24% increase compared to the market average.

With businesses increasingly recognizing the importance of design thinking and innovation, this skill set has become highly sought after by employers worldwide.

Real Life Use Case – Redesigning Patient Experience in a Hospital 

Challenge – A hospital was receiving consistent negative feedback from patients regarding long wait times, confusing navigation, and a lack of personalized care. The management decided to use the design thinking process to address these issues and improve the overall patient experience.

Observation: The design thinking team conducted on-site visits, observing patients and families navigating the hospital. They interviewed patients, staff, and caregivers to identify pain points.

Insights:

  • Patients were frustrated with unclear signage.
  • Long wait times in the emergency department caused anxiety.
  • Follow-up appointments were difficult to schedule efficiently.

Reframed Problem Statement:

How might we create a seamless and stress-free experience for patients from the moment they enter the hospital to the time they leave?

Brainstorming Solutions:

The team hosted workshops with hospital staff and patients to ideate solutions. Using techniques like mind mapping and SIT (Systematic Inventive Thinking), they generated ideas such as:

  • A mobile app for appointment booking and real-time updates.
  • Interactive digital kiosks for navigation.
  • A triage system to prioritize critical cases while reducing wait times.

Prototypes Created:

  1. A mobile app prototype with features like scheduling, reminders, and real-time updates.
  2. Digital kiosks with touchscreens and multi-language support for navigation.
  3. A redesigned triage workflow for the emergency department.

Testing: 

These prototypes were tested with a small group of patients and staff.

Feedback was collected, and iterations were made. For example, the app interface was simplified after users reported difficulty navigating it.

Rollout:

The hospital implemented the solutions in phases. The app was launched alongside digital kiosks in the main lobby. The new triage workflow was introduced in the emergency department.

Results:

  • Patient satisfaction scores increased by 40% within six months.
  • Average wait times in the emergency department decreased by 25%.
  • The app received positive reviews for its ease of use and convenience.

Reflection:

Real-Life Use Case – AirBnB’s Redesign of the User Experience 

Challenge:

In 2009, Airbnb was struggling to attract users despite having a functional platform.

The founders realized that their listings often had poor-quality photos, which made the properties less appealing to potential customers.

Observation:

The founders personally visited users in New York and noticed that low-quality photos made even great properties look uninviting.

They interviewed hosts and users to understand their experiences and frustrations.

Insights:

  • Hosts often used smartphone cameras, resulting in unprofessional photos.
  • Users wanted a reliable sense of what the property looked like before booking.

Reframed Problem Statement:

How might we improve the visual appeal of listings to build trust and increase bookings?

Brainstorming Solutions:

The team explored various ideas, such as:

  • Offering a professional photography service for hosts.
  • Creating a platform feature to enhance photo quality automatically.
  • Providing hosts with guidelines for taking better photos.

Prototypes Created:

Airbnb decided to test a professional photography service. They hired freelance photographers to take high-quality pictures of hosts’ properties in New York.

Testing:

Listings with professional photos were compared to those with user-generated photos. The professionally photographed listings received significantly more views and bookings.

Concluding Thoughts 

Design thinking isn’t just a buzzword.

It’s a transformative approach which enables businesses to solve complex problems with creativity and empathy.
